Marketing, Copywriting, and Sales newsletters you need to read
If you’re a creative business owner, you’ve heard a million times that email marketing is important and that you should start a list.
Growing a list is a great way to start a community. It can be the first line to beta testing new offers or convert a sale. That's because your newsletter is where your warmest leads are. So use this as an opportunity to further drive know, like, and trust.
But to start a list, you have to know what’s out there before writing your own (or you could hire someone to write them for you). I recommend that you subscribe to and start to study how others write their newsletters, so you can:
1) Learn how to write a captivating subject line
2) Deliver content that is valuable to them
3) Make your audience excited to see your emails in their inbox.
Here are the best newsletters on marketing, sales, and of course the craft of storytelling found in copywriting.
Marketing Newsletters
Growth Hacks Weekly
I found Marketing Max on LinkedIn and knew that he was one of the rare marketers who cares about helping people. Growth Hacks Weekly always marketing takeaways and lessons that feels doable for my low-energy, introverted self.
Marketing Brew
Think The Skimm, but marketing. *Marketing Brew gives you daily marketing news so you can stay on top of or forecast any trends. They send an email three times a week, packed with industry know-how you wouldn’t find anywhere else.
Please Advise
This short and sweet weekly newsletter *Please Advise is skimmable which is a big plus.
Every week they offer a round-up of articles, podcasts, and seemingly unrelated videos that always leave me curious.
Articulo by Oh Sierra
Xanthe and Frank of Oh Sierra are the definition of cool marketing (did I just make that up, yes, yes I did).
Their newsletter oozes community as the foundation of running a business (Psst: if you want to be in their presence, check out their paid membership *The Table).
Anything Oh Sierra creates is chef's kiss.
Total Annarchy
If you don’t the Ann Handley, you should pick up her book right now.
Known for her content marketing knowledge, support and engagement with her audience, and funny stories. You won't be sorry that you subscribed to Total Annarchy. Not to mention she actually responds back (I have her email framed on my wall, no biggie).
Copywriting Newsletters
Bookmarked
Okay, okay, if I can humble brag for once, and introduce you to my weekly newsletter : Bookmarked.
My favorite newsletters are one that gives valuable information through example. That's actually how I learned how to write copy: by observation. So when I started this newsletter, I knew I wanted to do the same thing.
The cool thing about Bookmarked is that every Thursday you get an actionable copy tip to implement. In real-time.
This newsletter is an example that you can learn from and apply any part of your copy (isn't that meta?!?)
Not to mention a quote of the week which I know you probably don’t care about, but honestly maybe my favorite part.
Meat & Hair
Ughm Ash Ambirge is a genius.
The end.
Just kidding, but I am so grateful that my online friend Grace introduced me to Meat & Hair.
Every day for a random season, Ash starts up her round-ups of copy and writing that literally makes me LOL until I get weird stares. I get sad when I don’t have Meat & Hair and I don't know if I survived without ( But if I can say anything is that that suspense works).
Not So Secret Email Club
Another genius writer, Nadia Amer’s Not-so-secret email club is copywriting gold. Everything from the accessibility by audio (please at least listen to the audio) to the everchanging microcopy, and Easter Eggs which has definitely inspired me to start a newsletter that others can’t wait to read.
As of 2023, she is on maternity leave, but check out her stories on IG to get a sense of her wit and hilarious conundrums.
Cool Copy by Terry
Terry is another story-based copywriter who I've followed from the beginning. Whether it’s his weekly newsletter, YouTube, or digital products, I am always glad to end the weekend with the calm presence of Cool Copy in my inbox.
Cole Schafer
Cole Schafer is a copywriter, poet, and damn good storyteller of the Honey Copy newsletter. He brings a different mood from the other lists mentioned above. His writing style is inquisitive and melancholic. Much like your favorite English professor would speak.
His challenges and courses have made me focus on what’s most important about copywriting: the narrative and message.
Sales Newsletters
Tonic Site Shop
Jen Olmstead, the co-owner of the beautiful website template shop TONIC, delivers a long but so worth-it newsletter.
The infamously named, Long, but weird newsletter can also be in the marketing and writing category. But I included it in the sales section, because every time I go on their website or buy a template, it makes me wonder how I even got there.
And honestly, that is what sales should feel like. That you are happy to buy because you and the owner believe in what is being sold.
Why We Buy
Another marketer that I discovered on LinkedIn is Katelyn Bourgoin of Why We Buy . She has the most informative newsletter I have ever read on sales psychology. Delivered with a relatable story (seeing a trend here).
You MUST follow her on LinkedIn, buy her digital products and courses (which always sell out because she is just that good).
You absolutely won’t regret subscribing to this newsletter. In fact, it should be required reading for anyone who runs a business.
